About the Book
A story of home, heritage and heart
Summerfield: A Collective History and Fond Memories is my tribute to the place I have always called home. It tells the story of Summerfield, Illinois, from its earliest days to the present through the voices, memories, and records of those who lived it.
This book began as a simple idea: to collect the memories of a community before they faded. As I dug deeper, I discovered just how much history hides in the corners of familiar streets, old photos, and family stories. What started as a few notes quickly became a full chronicle of the people who made Summerfield what it is today.
Inside these pages, you will find stories of settlers who built the town, churches that brought people together, schools that shaped young lives, and families whose names still echo through the generations. You will see how the town changed over time, from horse-drawn wagons to railroads, from small farms to new businesses, and how its spirit has remained the same throughout it all.
This book is not only for the people who live here now, but also for anyone who believes that every place, no matter how small, has a story worth telling. My hope is that readers will see pieces of their own hometown in Summerfield: the same pride, the same memories, and the same sense of belonging.
For me, this is more than history. It is gratitude. It is remembering where we came from so that future generations can understand who we are.
About Author
My name is Wayne E. Loehring, and I was born and raised in Summerfield, Illinois. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the people and places that shaped our little town. I have always believed that history is not just about what happened but about who made it happen: the families, the workers, and the dreamers who gave this place its heart.
I spent much of my life teaching and learning from others, but my love for local history has never faded. Over the years, I gathered stories, photographs, and records from friends, neighbors, and the town’s archives. At first, I did it simply out of curiosity. But as the stories grew, I realized they deserved to be preserved and shared.
Writing Summerfield: A Collective History and Fond Memories has been one of the most meaningful projects of my life. It gave me the chance to reconnect with my roots, to honor those who came before us, and to make sure their stories do not disappear with time. This book is not just a look back. It is a reminder of the values that still hold us together today: community, faith, and pride in where we come from.
I am not a celebrity or a historian by title. I am simply someone who loves his hometown enough to tell its story before it is forgotten.
